John Macready

John Macready wonders about the beautiful questions: What does it mean to be human? What is human dignity? How might we live authentic human lives? Are there normative principles immanent in our individual and communal practices that can orient and promote human flourishing?

John guides his students in reading and thinking about these questions in his role as Professor of Philosophy at Collin College, a public community college district near Dallas, TX. He teaches introductory courses in philosophy, ethics, logic, philosophy of religion, and social and political philosophy. He is interested in critical issues in social and political philosophy, with specific attention paid to the philosophy of human rights.

He specializes in 19th and 20th-century continental philosophy, and he is the author of Hannah Arendt and the Fragility of Human Dignity (Lexington, 2018) and A Continental Guide to Philosophy (Edinburgh University Press, 2022).

John was a visiting scholar at the Bard College Hannah Arendt Center for Politics and Humanities

He received  Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Dallas and a certificate in intermediate German (B1) from the Goethe Institute in Göttingen, Germany. He is on the board of the Dallas Goethe Center
